My favorite hand made deodorant recipe

IMG_1384

This is legit people…it is natural deodorant that actually works and it’s super easy to make in minutes!

Try it yourself!

1/4 cup of Baking Soda (aluminum free!)
1/4 cup of Arrowroot powder
6-8 tablespoons of Organic Coconut Oil
4-6 drops of your favorite Essential Oil (I used uplifting Joy this time)

Warm a sauce pan on low and mix all the ingredients together until it’s soft enough to fold and stir it all together well. You don’t want your coconut oil to melt all the way.
Then simply fill an old deodorant container or glass jar. Place in the refrigerator for 10 minutes to set up.
Use daily…everyone around you will be thankful!

Black Bean + Kale Soup

YUmm…always looking for more ways to use Kale, this one will be on the meal menu this week!

Love and Lentils

It doesn’t get much simpler, or healthier for that matter, than this veggie loaded soup.  It’s one of those soups that I (pretty much) guarantee you have all the ingredients for in your pantry and fridge.  My little guy also loved it, although I did have to pull out the kale from his bowl.  The only way he eats kale (for now) is when I make him chips.  I saw a recent poll on facebook where we were asked if we truly like kale or do we feel it’s just a fad?  I personally love it, it’s so versatile, tasty, and you can’t deny the health benefits.  It is also fantastic in this soup alongside the plump black beans.

Black Bean + Kale Soup Recipe

Serves 8-10

Ingredients:

  • 2 cans organic black beans
  • 1/2 a bunch kale, washed, stems removed and discarded, and torn into pieces
  • 8 cups vegetable broth

Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy…

A lesson in sunscreen: A friend had mentioned sunscreen usage in infants a couple of days ago and I was shocked to find out that I should NOT be putting sunscreen on my baby until after 6 months of age! I had no idea, our Pedi never mentioned anything about it! I actually did a lot of research trying to find a sunscreen that was as pure as I could find on the market, so that it was safe on his skin. Now I’m finding out that no sunscreen is the way to go and doing all the other “out of the direct sun methods” are what is right. I feel like such a dummy, but I actually thought I was being a bad Mom by not putting it on sometimes, thinking if he gets sun burnt I’m going to feel awful. The only thing on my mind was “he has my husband’s skin tone (PALE) and he is going to look like a lobster after minutes in the sun! This is very different from myself, I am lucky to have a nice olive tone and I almost never burn. I almost never wear sunscreen either, other than in my make-up so my skin stays pretty. I definitely pride myself in how dark I can get in a summer. I love the Sun. My Daddy calls me Sunshine. I prayed for my son to have my eyes and my skin color, so far he just has my eyes. SO now that I know better…I wanted to find some explanations to help those out there they may be in the same boat.
A natural website that I follow is not spanking me at this point for putting sunscreen on my infant, mainly because both of them that I used are in the top 5 best/safest out there according to . However, they mention it should be used as a last resort. Because babies lack Melanin, they definitely need to be protected and you can find more ideas how to accomplish this
With all of that said, Lochlan will wear his cute fishy sun hat and be protected by the Moby wrap when we are out at a 5 year-old’s baseball game this afternoon! But I will hang on to his California Baby and Badger Sunscreens for later this summer.
Lastly, Don’t forget to check expiration dates! They are on sunscreens for a reason!

Lord, Thank you for our little blessing and all the little lessons that come along with him!

When “Bathing Suit Season” and 8 weeks postpartum meet

As if shopping for a bathing suit isn’t bad enough for most women, time it up to be right after you have a precious little baby (or in my case big baby)! As proud as I am of my scar and “beauty” marks I now possess, they are not exactly considered attractive to the outside world or in this case the Beach. Maybe someday I will try on a bikini again, but for now I will be shopping for what I now call a “mommy suit”. Yesterday, I went shopping with one of my most treasured friends in search of a stylish one piece suit that I would not only feel comfortable in, but also look young and cute in! I did not realize this would be almost mission impossible…maybe I’m just used to buying separate pieces, but I know I’ve gotten plenty of suits under $100. One pieces are not only hard to put on (ha!) but they are expensive! Being a stay-at-home mommy now, my husband was going to be pretty disappointed if I had purchased one of the two suits I actually somewhat liked, but didn’t LOVE enough to spend over $100 on it. One was actually a dress made from swim suit material…is that a complete bathing suit comp-out or what! So in conclusion, my mission continues. I was so thankful for an understanding friend to come along to help hold the baby and help me with an honest opinion. Hopefully I will have a successful find and picture to share soon!

Lord, I pray that you help me embrace my new body for the beauty it once held and now shows. I pray for all women to think of themselves as beautiful, whether they have carried babies or not because every woman deserves to feel confident! Amen

Power Ball!

Who is playing today!? We normally always play when the stakes get high, knowing that the odds are not exactly in our favor. My husband told me yesterday that he heard you are more likely to die from a coconut falling on your head or more likely to get struck by lightening 256 times than to win this Power Ball Jack Pot! But…..you can’t win if you don’t play right? We bought 3 tickets and even though we are playing, I find myself thinking there are so many more deserving people than myself, so many more that really NEED that money. Don’t get me wrong I would know how to spend it and I would like to believe I would do a lot of good with it as well. We watched Hunger Games last night, pretty disturbing movie/book if you ask me…but quoting from that movie, “may the odds be ever in your favor!”

Lord, I pray that the winner (winners) of this massive amount of money is well deserving and will not only do good for themselves but also good for their family, community and for our world. Amen

Good Luck to all playing
